Here is the note for R client taken during the discussion. If you have any other comments to share, please post them here. Thank you!

Multi-object data pkg: provide preview function just on CN instead of MN

Parameters for create() or upload(): only the dataset ID

Searching function on R client: could be text-based; link to search engine; develop search API (but not top priority)

Local cache: top priority

Identifier: have a function to automatically generate identifier but not dramatically long string

Create a function to list users’ rights to the dataset (read, write, etc)

Special accounts: authenticated user roles
Verified users: not clear

Metadata: when uploading if not providing metadata, system gives error? If no systematic metadata, system gives back error, but not necessary for scientific metadata. Make the metadata template available so users can just download, fill, and upload it.

Data analysis: make remote services available, run workflows on scheduled time

Provide a function to provide R history

Other two tools: matlab and excel, any others? Simulation model tool maybe.

Consider data preservation properties, for example, data products link with raw dataset

Access to genetic data files

Deal with large object: providing identifier for existing object in system

Provide guidelines: metadata generation, best practices using R client (don’t archive too many intermediate outputs, for example)

More official batching process, getting portion of large dataset from other MN to the user

Provide a package function, provide package ID, relating to dataset

Interoperable function: link from Mercury search to R client (using the same ID), have sort of D1 object search

Q: Do DataONe MN's support the functionality of upload before curation? A: Some do. Q: Cool!

A general comment to DataONE architecture that sparked a neuron during the R demo: When downloading data, particularly large data, it could be useful to do a cooperative download from ALL (i.e. sum of) MN's in order to spped downloaded. This could crate a P2P download functionality seamlessly.

What would help? suggestions from the audeince:
- Documentation
- Set of case study examples. Show how it was used to do specific things.
- Tutorials (and present them atrelevant conerences )
- provide scripts/templates for R users
- point out additional functionality that DataONE brings to R community
- Have some blackbox provenance. What is the parameters going in. Capture dependancies "There is a wealth of information in the command history" could use gudiance from provenance WG
- capture proveance and input and output functionality
- provide guidance on size of tranfer request. I.e. rasie a flag when a 1 GB download is requested
- Provide help on porting normal R scripts to being "ported" to DataONE integrated
- From usability it might be useful to have a visual view of data and owrkflow. Exp. for the commandline averse users.
- Provide "hooks" for collecting metrics. (myabe templates)
- Provide a "stroy" case study for how DataONE added R functionality as a pattern that could be used for other "plugin" developments

Have an intermediate (scratch) area for users to describe metadata and upload to the system later

need a convinient fucntion to do the citation of the dataset

Availability of citable analysis (R script upload); or run R scripts remotely and just download the results

A complete description what R can complete, what R cannot, and suggestions for other tools that can complete the tasks R cannot; same for other tools

Discussions of "chaining" ITK tools together came up a couple of times. One was in the context of searching for data using Mercury and then linking from results to starting a dataset download in R. Another had to do with improving metadata creation; improving R may not be the best approach: instead could R be "chained" to some other ITK tool (Morpho?) for metadata creation?
