26 July 2013

Attendees:  Rebecca, Laura, John C., Dave

Regrets:  Amber, Suzie,

Agenda:
        1. High profile issues
            SEAD - see below
Need help with fleshing out the detailed MN deployment checklist, particularly on the CCIT side:  https://repository.dataone.org/documents/Committees/MNcoord/Coordination_Work_Area/DRAFT_Member_Node_procedures.docx  - who can help?  (LM)
Rob Nahf is probably the best bet right now as everyone is really busy. cy Dave, Matt, Chris
When do we use the webtester? Does the MN work independently of other stuff, i.e. verify services, evaluate services.  A MN doesn't have to pass ALL tests, and this has been a point of confusion for some MNs.  Need a list of tests that MUST be passed for tier 1, tier 2, etc.

        2. Status of MNs
"In Progress" and "Testing" MNs for Y4Q4 are:

            "New" for Y4Q4:
Action Item: Needs follow-up and reconfirmation of status and prospect when Matt is available..
            Y5Q1:

             Others:
Follow-up on remaining (formerly) Y4Q4 prospective MNs:
        3. Old action items

        4. not-high profile issues
At some point after Dryad and EDAC go production, we need to do a post mortem with everyone to discuss issues that impacted their implementation.  Communication seems to be an issue.  Plan??  Wait until Dryad and EDAC are production, but when one of them is online, maybe we can take the detailed MN documentation and ask them to review it and see if it meshes with their experience
An old action item:  Poll MN's for what is of value to them in DataONE participation (how to accomplish this? - MN forum topic?) prepare for DUG time-frame, we need to identify 1) what we need to know, 2) questions to ask to find that out, 3) format for asking those questions (survey monkey?, other?) - maybe get with Suzie et. al. for guidance?  Ideally, we should do this sooner rather than later.  Maybe conversations at DUG could provide some info along these lines. Would be nice to have both Suzie and Amber involved with this - look at late August/early September for SA/AB availability to discuss (Laura put on calendar)

        5. around the room

From Amber: I have set about a google map of DataONE MNs
(https://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=201099493701187189053.0004e2571a86a5a6caaeb&msa=0&ll=27.059126,-0.351562&spn=140.072175,317.109375)
I have asked Laura to continue to population with 'upcoming' MNs.

The  purpose is twofold: 1) when we need a map for presentations we have  something that is up-to-date (I found myself adding triangles to our map  for my presentation for this meeting) 2) In the absence of our  dashboard, I was also thinking that we could put this on our site?   There are pros and cons of having a google map - it'd be nice if we  could customize the look a little
Comment: It may be useful to rethink this a bit. For exampe, While LTER network office is in Alb. the LTER holdings probably constitute many, many pin-pricks on a map like this.
Example peer benchmark: ODG http://display.grid.iu.edu/ (b.t.w. this display is also a good case studiy w.r.t. to dashboard presentation planning)

New opportunity; A. Sallans suggests two opportunities. (see e-mail conversation)
Beetle project - 270TB in size images of beetle behavior
Herbarium network - potential pitfall if a herbarium represents their data as a single object consisting of a single, large RDMS. (frequent updates, large blobs, excessive aggregation at the granule level) Recommendation: Very Dangerous - make Dave V. go first.   This is SERNEC |www.sernec.org/‎

Other entities working on collecting/managing env/eco data:
iDigBio (Fl)  (Andrew's herbarium folks (SERNEC) have talked with iDigBio)
GBIF (Europe)

Rebecca:  revisit the google map idea when Amber is present, Rebecca not here 8/2 or 8/9, Laura to set up MNW meetings via GTM02
Dave: nothing today
John: nothing today
Laura: follow up on Andrew's opportunities above
