Session 3, 11:10-12:30b

Agenda:

0. Welcome new attendees - introductions:

Reagan Moore, PI of DFC - Interested in sites for distributed data, layering the DataONE MN API on top of the iRods software stack
Mike Frame, USGS - Goal is to publish data from different USGS groups uniformly to DataONE. Desire to use same processes as Government Open Data workflows that are in use in USGS.

Wendy Thomas - MPC
Nicki F. - Australian reasearch network (TERN)
Felimon Gayanilo - Texas A&M - GCOOS system architect
Matt Nielson - USGS
Jim Myers - SEAD
Patrick West - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Nancy  Hoebelheinrich- Knowledge Motifs LLC; also working with RPI on ToolMatch service for ESIP
Soren Scott - EDAC MN - New Mexico EPSCOR
Lynn Yarmey - NSIDC (BEW: NSIDC is a NASA Data Center, peer to ORNL DAAC, with a long history of collaboration between these two).
Corinna Gries - GLEON
Jamin Raigle - Systems Administrator UNM

Bob Sandusky - UIC
MF - General comment - Metadata can contain a number of services that could then address different metadata standards, services that exist at the MN Institution. DataONE probably needs to look at how to expose these MN services (some of the Data Services in Phase 2 will address this) in Discovery process

In response to DataServices Registery - should also include services in Metadata to take advantage of those services within MN on some of their datasets. DataONE just needs to figure out how to "invoke" those services at various stages during search, discovery, and viz.

1. Network-wide update and issues affecting MN's as a whole

Session 4, 1:30-2:50

Agenda:

0. Welcome new attendees - introductions:

Greg Golllberg - Northwest Knowledge Network,
Andrew Sallans - Center for Open Science, not planning to set up a MN (but hoping for connection to DataONE systems in future for submission and consumption)
Dan Valen - product specialist at Figshare
Chris Eaker, University of Tennessee
Debora drucker, EMBRAPA, INPA, Brazil
Tracey Kugler, MPC
Karl Benedict, formerly EDAC, now Research Data Services, UNM

Extensive discussion of the series ID concept and how things work with multiple MN's having copies of the same data.  The gist is that if the identifiers and checksums are the same are the same, the second node coming in will be recognized as being a copy (replica) of the first.

Some concern about what happens if the data are the same (identical checksums) but the identifiers are the same.  Bruce to write a story for Redmine about creating a report (potentially part of the dashboard?) of hash collisions with differing identifiers.  Given the probabilities of a happenstance hash collision (even with MD5) it is likely that two files with the same checksum are the same file.

Discussed V2 of API coming out.  Member nodes will need to upgrade when this comes out.  Bruce and Laura to work out the tracking for this and providing information to MN's about what will be involved in doing the upgrade. MN's will be able to stay at V1 of the API for "a long while".  Key elements of V2 are the series identifier and shifting the authority for system metadata from the CN to the MN.

Question about what's coming up with provenance tracking.  Paolo Missier and Bertram Ludaescher key people working on the provenance working group.  The work being done here is being mapped out.  Based on Prov proposed W3C provenance traces (see http://www.w3.org/TR/prov-dm/ and http://www.w3.org/TR/2013/NOTE-prov-overview-20130430/ and http://vcvcomputing.com/provone/provone.html).  Key aspect of our work is making this provanance data searchable.

2. Open issues:  MNs please add anything you would like to address here.

PPBio - SSL certificate issue: browsers don't support certificates issued by the gov.br CA
MPC - DDI metadata alignment with DataONE is the next challenge
EDAC, NKN - identifiers: replicas at different institutions that are out-of-band replicas (from the D1 perspective).

3. Feature requests/opportunities for collaboration:

4. MN showcase:  Member Nodes who are present, please discuss your status:

If you have any other comments/suggestions about anything discussed here, please feel free to post to developers@dataone.org.
